A personal intro to starting hydroponics simply and successfully, even in small spaces.
If you’ve ever thought growing your own food was only for people with big gardens or green thumbs, let me show you something different. Hydroponics is a soil-free, space-saving method that lets you grow fresh vegetables and herbs right where you are—kitchen, balcony, or backyard shed.
When I started, I was overwhelmed with information online and didn’t know where to begin. That’s why I always tell beginners to start small: one or two plants, a simple setup like a Kratky jar or deep water culture bucket, and a little curiosity.
You don’t need to buy expensive gear upfront. A clean container, good lighting (even natural sunlight if you’re lucky), quality nutrients, and a little attention go a long way. The joy of harvesting something you grew—especially your first batch of lettuce or peppers—is worth every step.
And don’t worry, you’ll make a few mistakes (we all do), but that’s part of the learning. Stick with it. Growing your own food in water is not only possible—it’s incredibly rewarding.
